Heraeus is a German family-owned bullion refiner, founded by the Heraeus family. The company was originally an apothecary, and had been in the service of royal families since its beginning in 1660. Wilhelm Carl Heraeus took over the business in 1851 and developed new, efficient ways to smelt platinum. This technological leap also improved his gold refining, and what was a modest apothecary became a national and international precious metal refiner.

The company is based in Hanau, near Frankfurt, and operates factories and offices in the following locations:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic (Czechia), Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States.
