Dating back to the Roman Empire, Italy has been a major power in Europe for millennia. It has been known as the Italian Republic since 1948 following its liberation and the abolition of the monarchy.

The lira, or lire (plural), has been the official currency of Italy from 1861 to 2002, after which it was replaced with the euro.
