The Austrian Philharmonic gold coins are also known as Vienna Philharmonic or simply "Philharmonic". Available in gold, silver or platinum they are minted by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich AG). The name is derived from the world renowned Vienna Philharmonic orchestra, which is the central focus of the design on both sides of the coins.
Introduced in 1989 with a face value of 2,000 Austrian Schillings, the gold Philharmonic has a 999.9 fineness (24 karat), it is one of the worlds most popular bullion coins, but is a particular favourite in Europe. Initially available in two sizes, 1oz and 1/4oz, by 1990 it was the best selling bullion coin in Europe and second in the world. In 1991 and 1994, the sizes were expanded to include 1/10 oz and 1/2 oz.
The main image features the pipe organ in the Vienna Musikverein's Golden Hall, and the obverse shows instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic, the horn, bassoon, harp and four violins and a cello.
