In 2006 the Royal Mint released two £2 Proof Gold Coins to celebrate the achievements, character and personality of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This coin is the one depicting 'The Man' and had an issue limit of 1,500.
Rod Kelly, a goldsmith and silversmith, was commissioned to design the reverse of this coin and capture Brunel's likeness for this commemorative coin. Brunel's portrait has him in the classic top hat with a cigar, whilst stood in front of what is believed to be the Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge near Bristol.
The edge of the coin reads 1806-1859 ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL ENGINEER.
This proof coin is sometimes referred to as the Double Sovereign. It contains 14.63 grams of gold (twice the weight of a Sovereign) and is 22 carat purity.
