This gold proof £5 coin (aka Quintuple Sovereign, or gold Crown) was issued by the Royal Mint to celebrate the millennium, with 2,500 sets produced.
The coin, known as the Millennium Crown, was created by the veteran stamp designer Jeffrey Matthews in collaboration with the engraver Robert Evans. The design replicates that of a clock, with the 12 hand sitting perfectly on the meridian line Greenwich Mean Time.
Along the edge of the coin is a quote from The Tempest by William Shakespeare, which reads: WHAT'S PAST IS PROLOGUE. The quote suggests the opportunity for change, and Matthews hoped this design would symbolise the potential that the UK has going into the 21st Century.
The Mint actually issued the same coin twice in both 1999 and 2000 - the only difference between the release being the obverse year. We consider this to be a single coin. You will receive either the 1999 or 2000 version.
Proof coins are struck twice to ensure greater clarity of detail and the result is an extremely attractive collectable. This coin will be provided in a protective plastic capsule.
