2002 Proof Gold £5 Coin Quintuple Sovereign Queen Mother Memorial

This Gold Proof £5 coin (aka Quintuple Sovereign, or Crown) was issued as a memorial to the Queen Mother, who passed away on the 30th March 2002. This coin was limited to 3,000 sets, with 2,086 originally sold.

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was the wife of King George VI and mother of the current monarch, Elizabeth II. Following her funeral, the Royal Mint worked on this coin to commemorate her life as a prominent British public figure.

The obverse bears the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, created by Ian Rank-Broadley, while the reverse was designed by Avril Vaughan - a medallist and sculptor. The portrait of the Queen Mother is surrounded by a wreath, and the edge of the coin says STRENGTH DIGNITY LAUGHTER in reference to the Archbishop of Canterbury's address at her funeral.
