September 1869 saw "Black Friday", which was the result of two Gold Speculators, Jay Gould and James Fisk attempting to corner the gold market by buying as much gold as they could without selling it. This increased the price of gold in the market, until the scheme was discovered by US President Ulysses Grant - he then ordered the US Treasury to sell $4 million of Gold back to the market, which made the price drop significantly which took away any advantage gained by Gould and Fisk.
