Description

1855 20 French Francs gold coin. This version has the Plain head portrait of Napoleon III and the reverse has the value and year surrounded by a wreath. The text reads NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR and EMPIRE FRANCAIS. The "BB" mint mark indicates that the coin was minted in Strasbourg. This version of the coin has the anchor privy mark, meaning that Albert Désiré Barre was Chief Engraver when this coin was minted. Albert Barre succeeded his farther, Jacques-Jean Barre, midway through 1855. Albert Barre was also succeeded by a family member; his brother Auguste Barre replaced him as Chief Engraver in 1879.
