The coin depicts a kookaburra flying across a canyon with a snake in its talons, snakes are a surprising part of a kookaburra's diet and this one is about to suffer the unhappy future of being 'softened' against a rock or hard tree before being eaten whole. The design also includes the inscription ‘KOOKABURRA’, as well as the coin’s weight, purity, design year, and a special 'P125' mintmark representing 125 years since the Perth Mint's founding.
