The 20 Kroner gold coin is one of the national coins of Denmark. It was produced by the Copenhagen Mint between 1913 and 1917 and is made up of 90% pure gold. Its size is fractionally larger than a British gold sovereign.
Christian X was the son of King Frederik VIII and Louise of Sweden. He succeeded his father on the throne and ruled between 1912 and 1947, even being subjected to house arrest after opposing Nazi occupation of Denmark during World War 2.
The reverse of the coin features a side portrait of Christian's head, as well as the words KONGE AF DANMARK or 'King of Denmark' in English.
On the front of the coin is Denmark's coat of arms, and this appears on most of their minted coins. The 20 Kroner also states the coin's year of production, its value, a heart symbol to prove it was made in Copenhagen, and the initials of V.B. Poulsen - the Danish Mint's chief engraver at the time of its mintage.
3.7 million 20 Kroner Christian X coins are believed to have been made, though thanks to World War 1 and World War 2 many of these have been lost, damaged, or destroyed, meaning this specific coin is now relatively rare.
